We had a fairly good drop a few weeks ago and one of the Freshest stomping grounds I like to keep a close eye on – the Bellinger River, peaked around about 6.5m – Any time Lavenders Bridge at Bello goes under is a decent flood and normally takes a bit for the river to bounce back. It wasnt as bad as I had expected though and about a week and a half later I was in the Bello River from Mylestom and managed quite a few decent Bream in a short session and also hooked, but lost, a Giant Herring.
But then sure enough we had to cop another lashing thanks to Cyclone Debbies leftovers, and the river again had a bit of an influx pushing it back up to about 2.5m. This sort of rise would normally be nothing to even worry about but with the water levels still not completely settled from a week earlier, the water is kind of just backing up and is very dirty.
Dont get me wrong though – Im not complaining at all compared to what the poor people just up North of us have endured from that weather event.
I hit the water today with Mitch from Wollongong for his first time ever using plastics, and even though the water conditions were quite average, we ended up having a great session! Mitch scored 4 Flathead, 3 Bream, a Luderick, Moses Perch & Trevally – all on his first day ever fishing soft plastics!
To top it off, he also hooked another Giant Herring but also lost it on its first jump, and then got dusted by a cracker of a fish I called for a good Jew after seeing some monster head shakes.
The Giant Herring are definitely sparking my interest – thats 2 in the past 2 weeks we’ve hooked, and there seems to be more around…
