I had some maintenance due on the boat this week, so after getting that done I kept a day open to give it a run and ensure everything was good. As always it’s flawless, the guys at North Coast Boating Center at Urunga are always a great help and do excellent work.
I spent a few hours on the Kalang scoping spots for next weeks Flathead Tournament being put on by the Urunga Anglers Club, and after finding fish in a few places I left them be and went up the Back of the Kalang to chase bream.
There are plenty up there, I found a lot on the leases, but they were hard to tempt. The water was clear but the fish weren’t spooky at all, I went right up to the leases multiple times and they were super focused on munching oysters, not stopping even with the boat right on them. As such i didn’t pull any fish from the leases.
Further up, I pulled some from the gravel beds and snags on hard bodies, and then got a good schooling in a deep hole on a plastic. My initial thought was a Jew, but when it rocketed to the bottom of an 8m hole (was hooked in about 3m on the edge of the drop), and found some structure on the bottom, I was very close to calling it for a Jack. I’ll head back to that spot soon and see what I can find…
