This weekend is the 3rd Urunga Estuary Sport Fishing Flathead Tournament, hosted by the Urunga Anglers Club! Im looking forward to fishing it again this year for the 3rd time. There should be plenty of fish to be had on the flats down the front of both the Bellinger and the Kalang, but I’ve still been finding flathead right throughout both systems so dont be afraid to explore.
Last years overall winner, fished the front from his yak all weekend with small plastics (2-3″) and just found a steady stream of fish the entire time to end up completely smashing the field in the points tally. I think that same tactic will probably take it again this year but Im sure a lot more people will be onto that technique, so if someone can get the numbers but still manage a few bigger fish for extra points, they will do quite well – Im hoping some of those bigger fish hit the deck of Mirag’in over the weekend.
Good luck to everyone fishing the comp, I will be down there on the water all weekend as well as hanging around each arvo at the sailing club so feel free to come and say hi! – Dale
